Hal Brooks is a Brooklyn-based freelance director. He was the Artistic Director of the Obie Award Winning Pearl Theatre Company. He has been artistic director of the Cape Cod Theatre Project since 2012 and was associate artistic director of the Ojai Playwrights Conference from 2010 until 2022. Recent credits - Regional: Heisenberg (American Conservatory Theater), Residence (Humana Festival), The Whale (Denver Center), Tigers Be Still (Dallas Theater Center), Six Years (Humana Festival), Be a Good Little Widow (Old Globe). Off Broadway: Nilaja Sun’s Obie Award Winning No Child…, Will Eno’s Pulitzer Finalist Thom Pain (based on nothing), By the Water (Manhattan Theatre Club), Urge for Going (Public Theater), The Bad Guys (Second Stage). At the Pearl: The Rivals, Uncle Vanya, The Bald Soprano, Don Juan, Figaro, Public Enemy, The Dingdong. He has directed at American Conservatory Theater, Juilliard, The New School, the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, University of Arizona, NYU Graduate and NYU Undergraduate. Mr. Brooks was a member of the now-defunct LCT Directors Lab, a Drama League Fellow, and a recipient of the NEA/TCG Program for Directors. Hal has taught at Yale since 2010, and has been on faculty of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies at Yale since 2017. Brooks became Director of Undergraduate Studies in 2023.
