TDPS is proudly a liberal arts program, and as such, we don’t have specific concentrations or tracks within our course of study. We encourage students to explore a diversity of domains within theater, dance, and performance studies (our degree requirements require this range of exploration). That said, many of our students build their own “track” of sorts, based on their own curiosities and goals. For instance, we offer a number of courses in playwriting…, and students with such an interest find themselves taking a good portion of them. The same applies to acting, directing, dance, musical theater, and design.
In most years, our curriculum will feature at least one course (if not two) with a particular emphasis in design. In the past two years, these courses have included:
- THST 401 Conceptual Sound Design for Theater
- THST 358 Introduction to Lighting Design
- THST 376 Digital Media in Performance
- THST 205 Building Theatrical Worlds
We also offer Production Seminars, which are courses that culminate in a fully produced production as part of the TDPS Curricular Production Season. These faculty-directed projects feature the work of student designers and are an important opportunity to gain practical production experience (Fall 2023, THST 344 Natasha, Pierre, & the Comet of 1812–was one such example and a thrilling one). Additionally, some of our students will pursue a senior thesis in theatrical design within the framework of our production season.
In addition to the 7-8 Curricular Productions produced by TDPS each year (all of which are designed, stage managed, and staffed by undergrads), Yale College produces dozens of extra-curricular shows each semester (on any given weekend, it is not uncommon for there to be more than a dozen performance events on offer!). Students independently produce some of these productions, and some are produced by larger entities (such as the Yale Dramat, which allows students to gain experience working alongside professional designers).
Then, of course, there is the David Geffen School of Drama and the Yale Repertory Theater (the University’s conservatory/professional school and resident regional theater). Some of our students take classes in design and production at DGSD.
